01 / DEFINITION

Visual Hierarchy explained

Visual hierarchy arranges elements on a screen by importance. Size, spacing, contrast, and position influence the order in which people notice information. Hierarchy creates consistent levels among headings, explanations, actions, and supporting information. Color alone is insufficient; spacing, typography, and order work together.

02 / IMPACT

Why it matters.

If every element has the same visual weight, important information is hard to find. A clear hierarchy makes scanning easier and reveals the main action. People often begin by scanning a page. When important details are small or scattered, they may miss what they need to decide; a clear hierarchy supports that first reading.

03 / EVERYDAY LIFE

Let's look at an example.

REAL-LIFE SCENARIO

Think of an event page.

When the event name, date, and registration button stand out while longer text and secondary links are quieter, the page is easier to understand quickly. If the registration button dominates while the event date is hard to find, people may proceed without essential information. Show what they need to decide before emphasizing the action.

04 / IN PRACTICE

How to apply it.

  • 01

Choose the primary message on the screen.

  • 02

Use size and space to separate levels of information.

  • 03

Glance at the screen and check what you notice first.
